The Help is a remarkable first novel by a very clever and observant young woman. It begins in the voice of an African-American woman who works as a maid for a white woman in 1960’s Mississippi. The dialect is right on, and the chapters
add on more characters with very credible stories. It is group of tales of bigotry, told in many voices. The tension builds for the reader, who turns the pages breathlessly to see whether the women’s stories will ever survive to see
the light of day. All Americans need to read this book!
